Company History

From Stephen Iser, Managing Director, Hume & Iser Pty Ltd

In the early 1880’s, William Humme and Henry Iser (my great grandfather) commenced their business operation on the current site in Charleston Place Bendigo, mainly supplying timber and iron products to the Bendigo Goldfields. I am sure these two gentlemen never imagined that the business would survive for 133 years and, in that time, would survive two World Wars and a Great Depression, and would be passed down to the 4th generation.

After Humme’s death in 1889 and later Henry’s in 1932 the business was continued by Leslie F Iser and William (Bill) Iser (my grandfather - 2nd generation) then later William’s children, Leslie W Iser, Thomas H Iser, Harry Iser (my father) and Ian Sides ( 3rd generation).

The business continued to prosper supplying building materials to the growing Bendigo and surrounding regional areas, including Swan Hill, Echuca, Maryborough, Castlemaine, Kyneton and all towns in between. In a major redevelopment in 1990, new offices and a trading hardware and timber warehouse (3000m2 undercover) were constructed, and again in 2003 a further 2000m2 was added to the hardware to facilitate the growing demands for hardware, garden, outdoor, electrical, paint and building supplies.

In September 2014, we completed another 1000m2 expansion for retail garden and green life products which has taken the retail and trade area to around 6000m2 of undercover shopping.

The Company Board consists of direct family members, these being Christopher Iser (Chairman), Tim Iser (Company Secretary), myself (Managing Director) Alastair Hope and John Iser, with Tom Iser (consultant). My sister, Pam Miller also works in the business.

The business is associated with the HOME Timber & Hardware buying group, but remains totally independent and is a very strong supporter with the Bendigo community.
